Bruzzo, Joseph
" Was on Board Sabalo for the return trip from Westpac in late 1957,  went to Sabalo out of sub school.  flew from New London to Yokuska and found out she was leaving next day to go back to Pearl.  Stuck it out in Pearl doing local ops till I swapped with an RM2 from U.S.S. Rasher SSR-269 to go back to Westpac.  Finished Westpac cruise on Rasher and was discharged Jan. '59."[date recd not recorded]

Served briefly aboard Sabalo. [57-58] Picked her right out of sub school, New London because she was on a Westpac cruise at the time.  Traveled from New York area via MATS air service all the way to Tokyo. Trip took three days, in the summer heat with my dress blues on.  Left arm so sore from my overseas shots I could hardly carry my seabag.  Had stops in San Francisco, Pearl Harbor, Quam, Wake & Midway. (maybe not in that order, but we stopped there).  After a wild Navy bus ride from Tokyo to Yokosuka, arrived at Sabalo about 1900 Hrs.  She looked so menacing, all in black alongside the dock,  I was thrilled.  Reported aboard, and the quarterdeck watch told me that she was leaving in the morning to go back to Pearl.
I was "pissed" .  O.D. was awakened and gave me a liberty pass for that night.  I don't remember who took me over to see some sights and have a few cool ones  before we had to leave, but it was a real nice gesture. Next morning we sailed, and me, a stranger on the boat and with a hellofa hangover.
I Went into sub school as an RM3, and made RM2 aboard Sabalo.  After a lot of daily operations out of Pearl, I made RM1, and was waiting for my new stripes.  USS Rasher, SSR269 stopped by from San Diego to go on a Westpac Cruise. That Was in 1958.  There was an RM2 aboard Rasher who had just gotten married and wanted to stay in Pearl so he could bring his wife there.  We hurriedly swapped boats and I was off to Westpac again.  He was happy and so was I.  Ain't sub duty great?? [eml recd 4 Mar 2009]

Bryant, Gregory
"Here is a short version of a very interesting life after my time on Sabalo (2-67 through the summer of 68). I left Sabalo and was transferred to the Cusk SS348. It was like going from cream to sour milk. We had 12 hours a day of scrubbing a very dirty boat on our way to west pac and when we arrived in Honolulu, we had a well scrubbed dirty boat. I was truly spoiled on the Sabalo."
"Anyway, after I got out in Dec 68 TM2(SS); I went back to school. It took 7 years, but I finally got an MA degree from San Francisco State University in Clinical Psychology. Never did a thing with the degree. Since then, I have been a Photographer, Construction worker, accountant (hello John Leconte) a cabinet maker, over a 15 year period, I owned 2 restaurants and a motion picture industry catering company in Hollywood, spent a few years as a PGA teaching Pro in Long Beach and then back to Construction. For the last 10 years I have been a project superintendent and project manager for 4 different construction companies in the Los Angeles and Orange County area in Southern Ca.
I have been married twice and, sadly, divorced twice. I have 2 boys by my second marriage and am blessed with a 16 year old and an 11 year old who are both super kids. Alex, the 16 year old is the drum captain for the marching band at Los Alamitos High School, a Junior this year, and Jamison, the 11 year old is one of the top 3 soccer players in his age group in AYSO 177. We have a great time together.  We golf; ski at Mammoth Mountain 2 or 3 times a year-- well, I ski and the boys snowboard, and because they are both in the Junior Lifeguard program, we spend a lot of time in the ocean. They keep me way younger than my 58 years."
"Since my boys are still young, I guess I won't retire for another 10 or 12 years, but what the heck, I don't have any retirement plans and I spent lots of time doing what I like. I have enjoyed very good health and hopefully will continue to do so for a good while longer. I would love to hear from any of the Sabalo gang and can be reached at":

Buchanan, John
Although I spent roughly 5 months (6July 68 - 27Nov 68) aboard the boat, and finished most of my studies, I was unable to formally complete my qualifications due to a bout of chronic sea sickness that landed me in the hospital upon our arrival in Yokosuka, Japan.  Close but no cigar!

Currently,  I'm the Manager of Special Projects (sales & marketing post) for a company that manufacturers a variety of marine electronics, including very special underwater TV cameras.  These cameras are used by the commercial diving industry, the offshore oil industry, for oceanographic research and various military applications.  As you might expect, these cameras are also used onboard U.S. Navy ships and submarines including the NR-1, and the recently commissioned U.S.S. Jimmy Carter, SSN23 (33 underwater TV cameras total at a cost of ~$500K).  Interesting where life takes us, wouldn't ya say?!!. [report recd Feb 2005]

I have been a Corporate Pilot now for 38 years. I rejoined the Navy Reserves a few years later and changed my rate to AE. I retired from the Navy/Navy Reserves as a Master Chief. I served on the USS America CV-66 during Desert Storm. I served on several carriers on the West Coast one being the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 where I was at on 9/11. I came aboard probably October 1969.  Because I completed A, B, and C schools, along with submarine school, before I was assigned to the Sabalo, it was over 2 years from the date I enlisted .   After I left the Sabalo was assigned to USS Gudgeon (SS-567).  Military life wasn't for me, got Honorable Discharge in July 1972. [rept received Feb 2006]

However, This and other lists contradict the above which shows that Crist was sent to Makassar POW camp in the Celebes Is. to work in copper mines.

    Dauber, Dieter G.
My most enjoyable -&- memorable tour in the Navy was on the Bluegill from June, 1958 to April, 1961.  I only served on the Sabalo for a short time (from November, 1961 through February, 1962).  After I was assigned to the Sabalo, I received orders transferring me to COMSUBFLOT 7, in Yokosuka, Japan.  If my memory serves me, I was transferred to the Carbonero in February, 1962, just prior to Sabalo's deployment to WesPac for six months.  I only served on the Carbonero for three months, until my transfer in May, 1962 to 3+ year assignment at COMSUBFLOT 7 in Yokosuka, Japan.   At that time, I was an RM3(SS).

I left the Navy in November, 1967, after serving 10 & 1/2 years on active duty.   I joined the Reserves and served another 10 years on USS Ling (AGSS 297) as a Reserve Instructor.  I started collecting my Navy Retirement pay January, 2000, at age 60.  I retired as a RMCS(SS).

My wife, Linda, and I spend our summers in Susquehanna, PA & our winters in Winter Haven, FL.

    Davis, Lawrence
After Sabalo went to Grayback LPSS-574 in 1968.

"I managed to get to Master Chief and retired after 26 years total time.  Had a few interesting assignments after I left Sabalo and mostly exactly what I had asked for.  I really enjoyed the Navy, therefore I had no intentions of getting out unless something drastic happened and left me no choice.  The friends and acquaintences that I met will last forever.  Now, its just about everywhere I go, there is someone that I know.  After I retired in 1981 from the Naval Hospital in Oakland, I went to work for the state in the correctional facility here in Vacaville.  That was really something, and I didn't cope with it very well.  After that I went to work for Mobil Oil Co. in their seismic research division.  I got my Coast Guard Purser liscense and sailed with them for about 4 years running a 5 bed hospital and doing all the supply and administrative duties, also as Safety Officer.  Was a great job and enjoyed it tremendously, but it was like away from home too much, and I had gotten remarried and had 2 children, so that was not for me in the long run.  I then went to work at Mare Island Shipyard in the Radiation Health branch, stayed there until it closed in 1995, then went to work at McClellan AFB  in Sacramento.  Worked there as an Industrial Hygienist until I retired just this past September(2000). Both the children are gone, the youngest a son is in the Navy, stationed at Lemoore NAS and is enjoying it quite well. He is an AD and wants to fly but had a vision problem.  He says that he will get it corrected and then reapply.  He went to San Jose State before he went into the Navy.  The eldest, a daughter is living in Nashville and is a CPA with a firm there.  So now its just me and the wife and we enjoy just spending time together and traveling whenever we get the notion.  Can't say that I have had many bad days until recently.  Had open heart surgery for a quadruple bypass, but came out of that with flying colors and now do mostly odds and ends and golf." Dipley, Dennis
"I served on the USS Sabalo from March 1967 till January 1971.  After leaving the Sabalo I went to instructor training and served aboard the USS Chopper, which was a reserve submairne in New Orleans, from April 1971 until the reserve submairne program was done away with in September 1971. After that I transferred to Des Moines, IA and was stationed at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center until June 1974 when I got out of the Navy.  At the time I got out of the Navy I was an EN1(SS). While stationed at Des Moines I ran into "Honey Bee" Losby, that was the last time that I have seen or heard from anybody who served on the Sabalo.
After getting out to the Navy I went to college for four years and never did get a dregee.  In June 1979 I went to work for the US Postal Service and worked there for 22 years."  [Rec'd about late 2001]

I was on the Nathaniel Greene SSBN-636 Blue from Apr 64 to Sep 69.  I was an MTSN - MT2/SS, then I changed my rate to RM and went to SABALO SS302. When the Sabalo was put o.o.c. in 71, I was transferred to Gunard SSN-662 for the next year (72-73) - just in time for a special op.
Next, I got shore duty in Pearl at Fleet Weather Center for 3 years where I was leading RM.
I then was transferred to Plunger SSN-595 for the next 3 years (76-79); made 3 WesPac tours and one yard stop at Vallejo for 6 months.
After Plunger I went to NTC to teach RM 'A' school for 3 years.
My last 2 years (81-83) were at Subic Bay on the Grayback SS-574 and put her o.o.c.  I went over to Subic at 190 lbs. and left there at 165.  A lot of San Miguel and hot days took the fat right off me.
I retired in Dec '83, and went to work for the Poway School District in San Diego area; retired after 8 years with them.
Moved to Grand Junction, CO; now working for the school district teaching kids to be a carpenter, that is, residential construction from the ground to the ridge cap on the roof.

I served aboard the Sabalo from late 1966 until mid-1969 as a Radioman 1st Class. I joined the Sabalo while it was in a yard overhaul at Hunters Point in San Francisco, and participated in the two West Pac (Vietnam) cruises during that time period.

In 1969 I left the Sabalo and went to shore duty at the Naval Training Center in San Diego where I taught classes in Radioman A and B Schools until 1972. At that time I separated from the Navy after 11 years of service. I attended San Diego State University, and Pepperdine University in Malibu to obtain my Bachelors Degree in Business Management, and later obtained a Masters in Business Administration. I left the San Diego area in 1975 and moved to Thousand Oaks, CA where I remained for 25 years. I worked for Litton Industries in Van Nuys CA for 11 years, and then for Northrop Grumman Corporation for 14 years before retiring in 2001. At Litton I was a Logistics Manager on various Army, Navy and Marine Corp programs. At the Northrop Grumman Corporation, I was an Engineering Specialist and Project Manager on the B-2 Bomber Aircraft Program.

In early 2001, my wife Joan and I retired and relocated to Reno, NV on our first hunt for the perfect retirement location. Reno was a great place, but we subsequently fell in love with Northern Idaho, and have now decided to relocate to Sandpoint. In September 2002 we moved to Sandpoint, Idaho to try it again.  We are very happy here with our new retirement home, and will probably stay for the duration.  [updated July 2005]

    Gartley, James
    [eml recd 18 Jul 2009]
Just a note to let you know that my Dad, James T. Gartley, Jr., who was on the USS Sabalo in (I believe) 1965, passed away on 4/9/09.  Dad fought a long, brave battle against COPD.  Guess smoking all those unfiltered Pal Mall and Camel cigarettes over the years finally got to him.
In going through all of Dad’s memorabilia for a scrapbook I’m compiling on his proud Navy Career, I came across your postcard “looking for men who served on the submarine”.  After leaving Hawaii, we landed in Norfolk, Virginia for about 6 months and then onto Connecticut where Dad retired from the Navy and began his second career with Electric Boat in Groton, CT.  Funny thing: I remember saying to Mom that now we have Dad around all the time, no more ‘out to sea’.  However, he ended up volunteering for sea trials; it was truly what he loved.
Attached is a copy of his obituary and my biggest regret is that we could not find a picture of Dad in his Chief Dress Uniform.

Thanks to all of you for serving our country.
Sincerely, Nancy (proud to be a ‘Squid Kid’) Gartley

Before Sabalo served on the carriers Independence CVA-62 and Forrestal CVA-59, then went to Electrician 'A' school at Great Lakes, and then on to Sub School at New London.
"I never qualified. I came aboard on my birthday, March 30 [1967] and immediately started qualifying (while mess cooking, you know how non-quals are treated). However, whenever we went to sea, my equilibrium caused me to barely be able to stand. I was diagnosed with an overly sensitive inner ear which I still endure to this day and getting worse, and in essence that disqualified me from duty. I was notified that I made 3rd class Electrician's Mate, and was thrown overboard in Port Angeles, Washington -- pretty cool water temp to say the least. As memory serves me, I believe I left the boat sometime in June, and was medically discharged from the Navy in August after serving just slightly over two years.

I was looking on your site because the Sabalo was one of my Dad's boats.  I remember it as a child in Pearl Harbor.  He was stationed there until 1958 and it was always a challenge to recognize him after 6 months at sea as he grew a different beard or mustache each tour.
My Dad retired from the Navy in 1966 as full Lt. He was ship superintendent of building the John Adams (620) in Portsmouth, N.H. from 1961-64 and served on the sub tender Bushnell in Key West from 64-66.
I am sad to tell you he died on June 22, 1996 in Kennett, Mo.  My Mother moved here to Enid, OK. in 1999.  I will tell you that I enjoyed being a Navy Brat and am still very proud of his submarine service.  I have a small submarine insignia pin that I wear at work every day.

Heistermann, Edward "Ned" Carl  Jr.  (Most people call me Ed nowadays)[He spells his last name with two 'N's, his brothers use only one.]

"I graduated from high school in Dallas, Texas in 1962.  After graduation I helped move the family to Bemus Point, NY where I then planned to join the Army (boyhood ambition, what can I say).  I went into the post office to join but never got to the Army recruiter after seeing a big poster in the Navy recruiters window with some white-hat sticking his head out of a submarine hatch.  I joined on July 24,1962 in Buffalo, NY, went to boot and MM 'A' school in Great Lakes then to Sub school in New London.  While in New London the Thresher sank.
My first boat was the USS Barbero (SSG 317) out of Pearl (May 1963- Jan 1964) Barbero was a missile boat and carried two Regulus II nuke warhead birds.  Made FN and earned my Dolphins while on a 120 day northern run. I stood watches in the Aux Rm (former Fwd Engine Room).  Barbero was a Jimmy boat with two main engines and a dinky.  When she was scrapped the hanger was sent to Viet Nam as a pressurized operating room.
After giving Nuclear Power School a short try I was assigned to Sabalo (SS302), reporting on board May 11, 1964.  I made MM3, MM2, and MM1 while on Sabalo. Paula and I married (36 years now), we had our first daughter, and I graduated from Divers School while in Pearl on the Sabalo.  Went on two West Pacs, 1964 and 1965, moved home port to San Diego and went through a yard period in Mare Island (started August or September, 1966).  I was a throttle man in the Forward Engine room while on Sabalo.
Transferred to the USS Spinax (SS489) in July of 1967 where I stood air manifold watches (ears were shot).  Went back to the yards; then was separated from the Navy on July 22, 1968.
Attended Jr. College in California then transferred to the University of Arizona from where I graduated with a BS in Mining Engineering in 1973.  My first job out of school was in SE Ohio working for Consolidation Coal (1973-1975).  While there we adopted our second daughter.
Since 1975 I have worked for North American Coal Corporation in ND, Dallas, and currently in Ackerman, Mississippi (you might ask where in the hell is that?).  We are just completing the construction of MS first coal mine, a 3.6 million ton per year surface operation featuring an 82 cubic yard dragline among other large equipment.  I am a Registered Professional Engineer in ND and MS.
Our daughter Stacey has two children and our daughter Sylvia has five.  Paula and I travel and Scuba dive.  Mostly I work."

    Jackson, Phillip 'Ken'
I first qualified in Submarines on Sabalo, as an Interior Communications Electrician ICFA - ICFN(SS)...1 July 1960 through 30 March 1961.  I then left for Nuclear Power School at Mare Island ICFN (SS) - IC3 (SS). I then went to prototype training at A1W in Idaho and qualified as a Reactor Technician/Reactor Operator IC3 (SS). After that I was assigned to the U.S.S. Patrick Henry SSB(N)599 Blue Crew IC3 (SS) - IC2 (SS) until discharged on 21 July 1964.
After I left the Navy I did some farm, ranch, oil field, construction, trucking (I owned my own for about three years), and law enforcement work, all in Colorado, Wyoming, and surrouding states. Then I joined the Army. While in the Army I became a Nuclear Reactor Operator and Health Physics/Water Chemistry Specialist, then made Warrant Officer as a Marine Engieer on Army vessels and in amphibious commands where I commmanded an amphibious detachment on the cleanup of Eniwetok Atoll, from the bomb testing. I left the Army as a Chief Warrant Office, CW2. Subsequently I have been working in the nuclear industry, eventually getting invovled in the management of decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities in the United States and in foreign countries. [eml recd 22 Mar 09]
I currently work for a major government contractor helping manage the decontamination and demolition of one of the key Manhattan Project plants in Tennessee...the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant, the world's first such plant. Jauernig, Carl
         Served on Bonefish before Sabalo - Aug. 31 1965 - April 15 1966.
" I only served on board the Sabalo for about 4 months just prior to my leaving the Navy as an Engineman in the Auxiliary crew  while the Sabalo was in dry-dock for overhaul in San Francisco, California.
After a tour of the Far East including the Gulf of Tonkin aboard the USS Blueback SS581, I decided that electronics was where I wanted my career to go (and there was a girl back home).   I left Sabalo and the Navy in January of 1967, got an "Associate degree in Electronics Technology".  I then worked for NCR in Detroit Michigan for a short time, But the big city was not for me.  GTE (General Telephone and Electronics) was hiring in Wisconsin, I applied and worked for GTE for just short of 29 years.  I had several job titles while at GTE, but I think that working on large PBX (private branch exchanges/large business phone systems), Voicemail (that stuff we all hate now because too many companies now use it to keep customers from disturbing their workers) and I got in on a little "packet data routing" was what I enjoyed the most.  In 1998, following a merger (to become Verizon Communications), I took a buyout and retired the first of, I believe, 4 times now.  By the way, I married that girl (Susan) back home.
We had one son (Timothy).  (We had wanted a boy and a girl, but medical problems prohibited any more children).  We now have a grandson (Tyler) and a granddaughter (Jensen)." [Recd 24 Mar 07]

    King, Marvin
I am writing to confirm my father's death.  Marvin E King died October 8, 2006, in Watertown, Wisconsin of thyroid cancer.  He was diagnosed in 2002 and was told he had 6 months to live but lived for 4 more years enjoying golfing, hunting, anything outside up until the last 6 months.  He was a great man, father of three girls that he loved dearly and seven grand children he totally enjoyed.  Dad was a self made engineer that never attended college but did quite well with his life.  After the war he went to work for Baldwin Lima Hamilton, in Hamilton, Ohio, and worked on the big diesel train engines.  For a time, when I was a child, we lived in Hawaii on Oahu where he set up machinery for the Dole Pineapple Company.  He worked for many years for Carnation Company in the Can Division in Wisconsin. From there he went to Crown Cork and Seal in their Can Division in St. Louis and then New Jersey.  He ended up back in Hamilton working for a family friend and designing machinery that made cement board.  He retired there and worked at golf courses to play golf.  When he became ill from the cancer, Mom and Dad moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to "the girls" and their families.
Dad spent most of his Naval career on the USS JACK and ended up on the USS Sabalo at the end of his career to go home.  It was great for my Mom to get the postcard and for me to be able to surf the website.  I loved the stories and the pictures.  Dad is in the picture of the original crew.  He is in the second row from the top, right side, second in. It was also great to see his name on the USS SABALO original roster.  I made copies for Mom.
I also would be anxious to hear if others died from thyroid cancer that could have been caused by the asbestos.
Thanks again for your persistence on finding his family. Again, I am Winnie Saeger, his daughter.  My email address is winsaegatsigngmail.com if you need any more info.
    King, Evans

Evans Paliku Kanaiaupuni King, a retired Navy captain who dedicated his life to the military, died July 10 due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86. He was the youngest son of former Hawaii Gov. Samuel Wilder King and brother of federal Senior Judge Samuel P. King.

Born in Halekou, Hawaii, Evans King spent 30 years working for the Navy. He served on a submarine at the nuclear bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, was commander of the submarine USS Torsk leading the fleet in the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, and was a submarine squadron commander during the Cuban missile blockade, according to a statement by his two daughters.

King was captain of the oiler USS Manatee during the Vietnam War, chief of staff of the 14th Naval District, Pearl Harbor, and earned two Legion of Merit awards, the statement said.

"He loved the adventure, the travel, meeting new people; he loved the challenges," said his eldest daughter, Pamela Savage.

Following his naval career, King spent 20 years helping military families in Honolulu plan their future after discharge and retirement. He also assisted Navy widows who needed financial help, said Savage.

"He had a good affinity for what families needed and communicated that. It was a tough job, but he believed in it because he knew what it was like if they weren't prepared financially," Savage said.

Besides work, King enjoyed an active lifestyle. On his 70th birthday, he hiked in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, and at age 76 canoed for five days along the Caledonian Canal in Scotland, stopping at B&Bs on the way, Savage said. He also enjoyed playing duplicate bridge three to four times a week with partner Madelyn Dunham, President Barack Obama's late grandmother.

King is also survived by daughters Pamela Mahi Savage and Pauline King; two grandchildren, Michael L.K. Savage and Katherine M.P. Savage; and sister Pauline N. King.

A celebration of King's life will be held at Borthwick Mortuary at 8 a.m. today with burial to follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Casual attire is requested. Instead of flowers, donations can be sent to the Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society.

Passing of Former USS Torsk CO

Evans Paliku Kanaiaupuni King, 86, a retired navy Captain and Financial Planner died July 10, 2009 in Honolulu of complications from pneumonia.  The youngest son of Samuel Wilder King, former Governor of Hawaii and youngest brother of Judge Samuel P. King, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1945 with a B.S. in Engineering. He went on to attend submarine school and served on submarines during the last days of World War II.  As part of his submarine tours, he participated in the nuclear bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. As commander of the submarine USS Torsk he led the US Fleet in the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and was a submarine squadron commander during the Cuban Missile Blockade.

During the Vietnam War he was Captain of the USS Manatee, an oiler and supply ship that sailed on the Vietnam coast supplying various naval vessels. Paliku's service as assistant director of logistics at the Pentagon earned him his first Legion of Merit. His second Legion of Merit was a result of his leadership during his posting as Commander, Hawaiian Sea Frontier. Culminating his 30 year career, Paliku served as Chief of Staff of the 14th Naval District, Pearl Harbor. During this time he was responsible for naval operations Pacific-wide.

After a very successful naval career, Paliku saw a need to help military families plan for their own futures after service and in retirement. For twenty years he helped families with insurance and financial planning needs. During this time in his life, Paliku traveled extensively and enjoyed an active and challenging lifestyle as evidenced by his participation in the Elder Hostel programs and almost non-stop bridge games.

Paliku met his wife Zori Rosalia Vidok in San Diego, California as a young Lieutenant. After 41 years of marriage Zori passed away. Paliku is survived by their two daughters Mahi Savage, Annandale, Virginia and Pauline King, Fort Worth, Texas; two grandchildren, Michael L.K. Savage and Katherine M.P. Savage, Annandale, Virginia; brother Judge Samuel P. King and sister Professor Pauline N. King, Honolulu, Hawaii.

    Knapp, Ezra
....was known as Pappy (Papa) Knapp because he was the oldest on board. Knapp was first class Quartermaster.  After the Sabalo, I decommissioned the Billfish and left the Navy for two months. I was sent from Texas to Calif. Later I get a call from Knapp he'd been transfered to shore duty in San Diego and was stranded in Elko, Nev.  I could not help, but he arrived in San Diego on my door step.  So I got him an apartment in the house I was living.

I was sent to the Pacific and I lost contact with him and later found he had retired in about 1948(?), and went back to New York State.  Pappy had a wife and four children who were in their teens in 1945.  My wife heard from his wife years ago after we moved to Calif. (When I retired 1960).  Later, when Ann (Pappy's wife) passed away, one of the children notified us, and told us Pappy went before she did.
