This section is for pictures submitted by shipmates.  So, dig out those old albums and photos and communicate what you have that could be included.  If you can't scan them, and will trust them to me, I'll scan them and return the originals promptly.  If you don't want to trust them to the mails, I suggest you try the possibilities at your local school.  Most now have the capabilty to scan, and if you bring your own floppy or cd-rw disks should readily handle a few photos.  I can convert just about any file format for posting. File sizes are indicated on some of the photos to give an idea of download timing. Jeff Owens

Some of the photos are organized into "Albums"   which are groupings with a common theme or timeframe.  The albums are composed of thumbnail views.  Click on the thumbnails for the larger image file.  Wait for the complete download of the image to get the full clarity. Posting on the internet requires the use of JPEG format which causes image quality losses and distortions.  Should you wish to make prints of any of the photos, send a note, and most likely I can email you a copy in a different file format which will yield better results than what you view on screen.

•   Launching 4 June 1944 and Commissioning 19 June 1945 - 7 images including photos of entire crew and details of the commissioning celebration party.  Also one shot of Sabalo with Philadelphia in the background, 1945.
  
• Sabalo underway, early 50's, before the snorkel conversion.  Submitted by Jim Palmer. [This is a scan of a scan, and thus is not great quality.  It is the only pic submitted so far of this vintage, so it'll have to do for now.]
• Sabalo underway, ca. early 50's??, post fleet snorkel conversion.(135Kb) [ There is some fuzziness in this picture which is likely from image format irregularities in scanning and computer manipulation.  It is noted that during this period the tops of releasable marker buoys were painted either white or yellow.  The sonar at this time used a top side hydrophone which can be seen in this and other photos as a T-bar about 3 feet high on the forward deck slightly to port.]  Submitted by Richard Lamy

• SS-302 USS Sabalo, SS-338 USS Carp and SS-349 USS Diodon, left to right, in nest, 1956 or 1957 (numbers not visible - painting in progress)(image is on the Diodon site)
• Sabalo at Pearl Harbor, probably about 1955, but could be as late as 1957, The marker bouys are clearly seen in these photos.  Of note is the fact that they protruded above the level of the superstructure. [ Later they were fully flush with the deck and superstructure,  and the rear buoy had a curved upper structure which fit into the port side aft of the torpedo room hatch.]  Note the upper surface painted a light color (white?).  Further of note is the amount of the superstructure that had metal decking.  In later years the teak deck board arrangement extended much further aft. The rectangular hatch covers pictured also were not a feature in later years.]  Also clearly seen in a couple of these is the escape training tower. • Sabalo underway, late 50's  Note the topside sonar dome configuration and the two tone paint job.  Other sites mention paint variations in this period as being called, "Measure 32".  Various sections of the sail and sonar domes are painted a lighter shade of gray. [It has been reported that the large sonar dome on the port side of the fore deck  is the BQR-2A and the small one on the starboard is the BQS-2.] Submitted by Jerry Ryan ( B&W, 118 Kb)

• Sabalo passing the "Esmeralda", a training vessel of the Chilean Navy with Diamond Head, Hawaii in the background ca. 60-61. Photo taken from Navy helicopter.  Photo found on the internet.     Same scene a few seconds later (505K) submitted by Earl Gates.   [Identity of this vessel was reported by  Terry Lee Heisterman, EN3(SS).  " I work with a guy from Chile and he informed me that the ship in the photo is the " La Esmeralda " of the Chilean Navy. It is used for training officers in their navy much like the one we have in Annapolis. The La Esmeralda was also in the tall ship/ 200 year U.S. celebration in New York back in 1976." ][The "B.E.          [The pictured vessel had been incorrectly identified  by some sources as the US Coast Guard ship "Eagle".  The Eagle has only three masts. ca. 1969 -  I forget the occassion, but I remember that we had just had a dungaree inspection.  One of our .30 caliber machine guns was in the forward torpedo room along with a few cans of ammo.  We took turns draping ourselves with the ammo belts and snapping "hero" photos. - Jeff Owens

Larry Douglas reports:  "Thought you might be interested in the attached pics of a sub model I built - tried to make it SABALO post WWII as much as possible. This is a dynamic diver. The pics are from the first outing last year[2003]. Number of surfacings equaled number of dives so it was a success! Made two other conning towers this winter early war and late war."
