RESPONSE NEEDED BY 1 July
If you’ll attend, Please return your reservation form as soon as possible.  No one will be excluded, even up to the last few days, but ability to accommodate late comers is limited. If you’re not sure you can make it, please read our cancellation policy on the reservation form.  You won’t be totally locked in, but we need some fairly firm number to set up the events.
If you can’t attend, please take a minute to send an email to let us know, and also include a line or two to let shipmates how you're doing.       We’ve spent the cost and time necessary to contact you, so please reciprocate.  Knowing you won't be attending is as important to our planning, as your reservations to attend, so please respond promptly.

About United States Submarine Veterans Inc. - The organization has as its goal the words of its creed.

USSVI Creed:  "To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of duties while serving their country. That their dedication, deeds and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States of America and its Constitution."

The main activity of the over 150 local ‘bases’ is the promotion of fraternity among all submariners.  Present members include men from Seaman to Admiral.  While each & every man should check out the possibilities of joining USSVI --     ** Membership in USSVI is not required for Sabalo events **

You are encouraged to check out the convention plans which include a number of opportunities for San Diego touring, and more than 36 other boat reunions and social events.  The dates for Sabalo events were selected following the convention activities to avoid conflicts.  If you want membership or convention information, you can visit the national web site: USSVI.ORG    If you don’t have internet access, please contact the editor.

SABALO SLIDE SHOW  The collection of photos in the 2007 computerized slide show had 725 images.  These were gathered from individual’s e-files sent in, CD’s with multiple pics, and other submissions including original photos donated to the Sabalo museum collection. Eventually all of the collection will be donated to one of the submarine museums.
While it is most convenient if you send your photos already scanned via either email attachments or CD’s, you can also send me your original photos which I will scan and store on a CD and return them, with a CD copy, to you.  I will make every effort to accomplish this in a timely manner.  (To a few I owe an apology for taking an extended time in the past to return everything after completion.)  Because this may be the last time for a slide show at a reunion event, an extra effort will be expended this time. So gather up your collection and review them for submission.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS & INFORMATION   Hotel Reservations are an individual responsibility.  Call the Crowne Plaza Hotel (2270 Hotel Circle No., San Diego) directly at 888-233-9527.  Call between 0700 & 2300 Pacific Time and tell them you want the USS Sabalo reunion rate which is $103 plus tax.  You can also book online using this link: https://resweb.passkey.com/go/USSSABALO  This discounted room rate which results from having our catered affairs in the hotel is effective between 8-18 Sep, so if you’ll be attending convention activities, or wish to stay before or after the Sabalo activities for any reason, you will find it less expensive to stay at our hotel rather than the convention main hotel (rooms there- $119/129+tax).  We encourage you to stay at the Crowne Plaza because we need to meet a certain number of occupancy nights to be able to get the free meeting rooms and complimentary extras included in our plans.  You can get guest rooms which allow smoking. Our hotel is 1.0 miles from the convention hotel. It is a 15-20 minute level, easy walk, or you can take the hotel shuttle bus to the Fashion Mall across the street from the convention center.

REUNION COMMITTEE REPORT:

Jeff Owens, Ron Gorence, Pete Lary, Larry 'Doc' Davis, and Ken Sanderlin.

Although our hotel in 2007 did an excellent job of hosting us, rising room costs and seeking proximity to the convention caused us to select a different hotel.  With goals to keep the budget as low as possible, the committee has worked hard to find a hotel and some activities that will be fun and still be as reasonable as possible.  But the prices are still high for those of us who started their Navy enlistment at $101 dollars take home per month.  What’s important now is seeing shipmates who have shared experiences, and have a bond which makes reliving some of the past enjoyable.  We hope you will participate, choose something you like, and join us for some fun times.

Our get together in 2007 was advertised as “THE FINAL SABALO REUNION”.   Considering some lack of participation exhibited by some previous attendance numbers, advancing age, and declining ability to travel, it all seemed to indicate that another formal affair wasn’t likely in the future.  However, a large consensus of attendees in San Diego indicated they would like to do it again.  Additionally, since then, more than a 100 additional living shipmates have been located and some may wish to attend a reunion.

While it is now a near certainty of this being our last full blown affair, a fair number of men may  attend some future USSVI conventions, and maybe a less formal Sabalo event could be arranged.  A list will continue to be kept for each convention in a section on the web site.  If you plan to be attending, or just interested in the possibility, please send your name for posting.

 The Sabalo web site:   http://USSSABALO.ORG

For some of you this may be the first Sabalo newsletter you've ever received.  However, the Sabalo web site was originated about 9 years ago when searching for those who served aboard began.  There are now about 1285 Sabalo veterans listed on the web site.  Based on research of the official records in the National Archives this is very close to all who were ever assigned to the Sabalo. A few, who were only aboard a few months or less may have been missed in some years because the microfilm record searching over 3 ½ days did not cover every quarterly muster list for the 22 years of her commissions.
As of this issue, the whereabouts of about 900 men has been determined.  About 500 are alive with known addresses, and a little over 400 of the total are deceased or probably deceased based on definitive information found.  The goal is that with some luck and diligent searching some more of the remainder of men who have served aboard will be located before our upcoming affair.
If you're not a regular internet user, perhaps you can get someone to show you the web site.  Details of the ship's history, photos, anecdotes, past reunion details, and other information can be found.

YOUR HELP NEEDED  Everyone is requested to submit any additional information you may recollect beyond what is posted.  IT IS VERY HELPFUL IF YOU CAN PROVIDE ANY SMALL RECOLLECTIONS FOR MEN NOT YET FOUND. Shipmate’s first or middle names are missing in many instances.  Also original home state or town, and wife’s name are useful  in narrowing possibilities for men with common names.  With your added clues I will concentrate on anyone not yet found.

The task of finding men and maintaining communication requires a fair amount of continuing time and effort.  It has basically been a one man operation, and consequentially I admit to failure to follow up in a few cases with replies or information about Ship’s Store items or other communications.  If you have sent me a message and not received a reply, I apologize.  Please send me a new message, and I’ll try to stay on top of it.

The SABALO CREW ASSOCIATION has no dues or elected officers.  Any man who served in her is a member.  Any funds raised, or ideas or efforts for future activities are solely by volunteer action.  Small donations to support the web site, communications and reunion organizing costs are appreciated.
