I served very briefly
with James MacLean and Tom Wilhelm while in dry dock in late
“69”. Say Hi to them for me. I qualified on the
AGSS Bluegill SS-242 and served until decommissioning in mid
‘69. I still communicate with a couple of my
shipmates from that boat. You guys take

6 Jul- I am hoping to come down to San Diego for a visit with all
the
guys. I live in Long Beach and have responsibilities to my son’s soccer
team.
That is the opening weekend of their season and I can’t miss it. I

to come down for the reception or the dinner on Saturday or Sunday.

I have a definite interest in attending the reunion.
I currently work as an exclusive consultant for a large
international marine electronics company. My specialization is
underwater TV and lighting systems used onboard submarines, surface
ships, ROV's and other military, oceanographic and harsh environment
applications. Needless to say, my submarine experience (short as
it was), has really come in handy over the years.
6 Jul- I have a very heavy travel schedule and 'may' be overseas
(Scotland) during that time. If not, I would plan on going to the
dinner only of the 13th. I should know more about 2 weeks prior
and shall advise you accordingly.

27 Jun- Due to medical reasons I
will be unable to make it to reunion. Tell everyone hello for me.

6 Jul- I saw the neurosurgeon Fri. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my
neck, and it has affected the ability of my spinal cord to move freely
inside my spinal column. I will have surgery on 22nd to remove part of
the back of spinal column. If he does not have to do a fusion at same
time, will be in hospital couple days and down for at least a
month. If fusion is necessary everything increases. I am really
sorry. I won't be able to make reunion. I was looking
forward to it. This is supposed to stop the progressive nerve damage,
right side is fucked, but he said this should save left side. Drink a
whole lot for me and tell everyone hello. Bert

diagnosed with disabling ostheo arthritis. We are
also caught dead in our tracks by this housing crisis. That long drive
to San Diego from Vegas is too taxing. I know we don't have many

Sabalo. I read with sadness some time back about the passing of
My Skipper Bill Masick a few years back. He was a great
skipper. He was our captain the full time I served on the Sabalo
from mid 1957 to mid 1959. |

Ultimately, I've had to decide not to attend, even knowing the risk

in her foot. She went in to have the foot amputated and the

Washington, DC. My primary client is the Government of Angola, so that
guarantees travel several times a year to that Portuguese-speaking
African country. Karen is an elementary school teacher near our home in
Fredericksburg, VA. Our daughter Meagan, a Virginia Tech grad, is
engaged to be married in 2010, and our son Kellen will finish college
soon with a computer science degree. We are active in our church,
enjoy biking, kayaking and sailing -- and retirement remains an
elusive concept.

client-related event in Washington (DC) will make travel to San
Diego a "no-go" in September.
Wish we could be there, the 2007
reunion remains a great Navy memory for Karen and me.

Sept.
If this changes, will do my best to attend at least once.

Italy.
(I did Tahiti last month). I will regretfully be unable to attend

of the Convention, due to this poor planning on my part. Thank

your efforts and I wish you every success. Sabalo was a fun part
of my
life and my respect for Captain Bill Masek continues. (He passed
away
with Alzheimer's several years ago). |

on 11 years of retirement from
Reynolds Metals Co. My Sabalo cap catches the eyes of lots of
people and just last night, I had opportunity to share info about
USSVI. I have lots of good memories of my years on the Sabalo ~~
would love to hear from anyone who was on board during
November 1959 - August 1961.
20 Aug- sorry that I have been
negligent in responding ~~ we have had several things going ~~ my wife
had some hand surgery done last week (3 month recovery), so we are not
going to try to attend this year. Maybe next year. |

21 Jun -We apologize for the
delay in replying to the reunion for the USS Sabalo. We have just
returned from a reunion in Tennessee for the USS Seadog and
unfortunately
picked up a bug on the airplane
on the return flight. After 4 days of misery, I spent six hours
in the ER and was diagnosed with pneumonia. The Dr. also checked
my wife and caught it just in
time before it went into her lungs. There fore we are not in the
best of health right now and cannot commit to attending. It is
anticipated up to four months to regain our strength and the Dr's
advice was not to travel. Ageing is not for weaklings!

My wife and I just
celibrated our 40th anniversary by taking a self guided tour of South
Africa. While in the Cape Town area we stay in Simons Town (South
Africa's major naval base) and toured the base & naval museum. For
a land locked sailor from Colorado, it was good to get back on the
ocean and sail around the Cape of Good Hope.

Basicaly I am doing pretty good
,was diagnosed with an abdominal aorta aneurism about two years ago
they had me on a yearly recheck until last check up in November at
which time I told the doctor I would be more comfortable with at
minimum a six month recheck and he agreed to do that so I am due for
another checkup on the nineteenth of march and if the thing hasn't
enlarged enough to cause problems another checkup in sept and if that
works out I will try to make the STERLET reunion in Branson I haven't
made any of thiers and besides I want to get some real fresh white
castles again.

I continue fighting daily pain from a NONQUAL doctor
accidently nicking my spinal cord ... all things considered, my daily
life is great and I get around fairly well. I have to battle many
muscle and nerve spasms daily. My wife Barbara, of 44 years is
doing well also but will have a major back operation this summer (5
level fusion). I stay busy with woodworking, doing honey-do's,
working around the yard and tinkering with our home "fix-it" items.

month's
leave until the middle of September '69, then got transferred to NTC,
San Diego in October of '69. That was 40 years ago! Lord,
