'Sabalo Survivors' plan local reunion Groton - U.S. Navy personnel who served aboard the USS Sabalo between June 1945 and February 1973 will meet for a reunion at noon today at the Thames Inn and Marina, 193 Thames St.
The group, called "Sabalo Survivors," served on a submarine that saw service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The submarine was first commisioned in 1945 and then decommissioned the following year.
It was again recommissioned in 1951 in Groton before leaving for a new homeport in Pearl Harbor. Eventually, the submarine changed its homeport to San Diego, where it was used for training exercises.
For information about the reunion call Jim Palmer at 887-4262.
Comment from one of the attendees:
" Spent July 14 with Jim Palmer & others in Groton. Had a
great day of conversation and then capped with a tremendous fireworks
display
on the Thames. Would like to say it was just for the
Sabalo,
but actually it was an annual display provided by one of the
casinos."
J.D. Longenecker
From Jim Palmer, reunion organizer: "It wasn't a big reunion, but it was a good reunion. The people that showed up had an enjoyable day. We had 'Sabalonians' from 1951 to 1970."
