U.S.S. Sabalo Returns to Pearl Harbor
After Six Months Tour in Korean Area

\
Submarine USS Sabalo docked here Friday, June 26, after completing her first tour in Korean waters. The Sub Base pier was crowded with families and friends of the crew welcoming the submarine back to duty at Pearl Harbor.

A Navy band was playing as the Sabalo returned from six months in the Far East to her home port after winning the congratulations of three admirals.

Commander in Chief, Pacific, Arthur W. Radford sent a "well done" to the crew. Commander Naval Forces, Far East, Vice Admiral R.P. Briscoe said the Sabalo's performance, "Has been a material contribution to the common effort against the enemy," and Commander Submarine Force Pacific, Rear Admiral G.L. Russell congratulated the submarine for her, "Splendid performance of duty," on the Sabalo's ninth anniversary, June 19.

It was the first tour in a combat theatre for the guppy-snorkel type submarine. Shortly after she was put in commission in 1945, she was sent to the mothball fleet and was not reactivated until June 27, 1951.

The Sabalo is commanded by LCDR Lawrence Savadkin, one of nine survivors of the World War II sinking of the submarine USS Tang. Commander Savadkin was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic action on that occasion and was a prisoner of war in Japan until the end of the war.
