One bus made two runs each way in the morning and the afternoon. 1700-1800 Welcome Aboard Cocktail Hour at our host hotel with mixed beverages, wine & beer, hors d’oeuvres & snacks. This was held in our hospitality room due to chilly and windy weather. Fri 13 Apr 0900 The group of about 82 persons mustered at the head of the pier (the one formerly called 'deep submergence pier') after being transported by two buses onto the base. We were broken up into groups of about 12 or 13 and led through the USS Topeka SSN-754 by 3 petty officer tour guides while some of us waited in the shelter erected on the pier for the boat's crew to eat meals. A lot of work on the boat was in progress due to the fact that the boat had just finshed a six month yard period and a number of unfinshed items were still being completed. 1200-1330 Luncheon at the Harbor View Inn, an on base facility. MENU: HOT BUFFET Views from the Inn During lunch the USS Jefferson City SSN-759 passed by from sea and was met by 3 tugs and docked. 1330- After Lunch the group was transported back to the pier for a walk through of the Swedish sub HMS Gotland. It was very interesting to see one of the few boats in the world that can run their engines underwater without a snorkel. With some time remaining after the Gotland tour, the buses went to the Cabrillo National Monument on the top of Point Loma for a tour of the much expanded museums and exhibits up there, and an absolutely wonderful overlook of San Diego. The visibility was about 50 miles, and near the end of our stay, as if on cue, the USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23, the largest and most technologically advanced submarine in the U.S. fleet, surfaced off shore and proceeded to meet its pilot and tugs for docking at the main pier. All were a little late reboarding the buses for the end of a perfect day.
