ALERT- 1970 and 1971 Sabalo Sailors
Beginning in 1970, the Navy starting using social security numbers instead of Navy Service Numbers for ID.  Because of possible identify theft concerns, official records using SSN's are not publicly accessible.  These records have not been released to the National Archives and remain at the Naval Historical Center.  Until such time as these might be consulted, the only listings for men after some point in 1970, which appear on the site, come solely from personal or other crew submissions.
PLEASE SUBMIT ANYTHING YOU CAN REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR SHIPMATES TO HELP COMPLETE THE LAST YEARS OF THE ROSTER DATA.

NOTATIONS USED ON THE ROSTERS
Nicknames while onboard are shown in quotes in the 'first name' column
Rank/rating may indicate promotions while on board. Highest rank achieved in later service is noted in the 'Notes' column if known.  The standard of these notations was changed by the Navy over time, e.g. a Seaman, rank E-3 was designated with 'S1c' in earlier times and later was 'SN'.  Numerous rating codes were also changed or abandoned.  The designations as observed in the official records are listed as found.
Period on board The tilde ' ~ ' is used to indicate approximate dates
Current Address If the character '#' (pound sign) appears in this field, a more complete address or phone number is available

Some of the 50's & early 60's official muster lists did not use full names, only initials.  Searching for someone, especially with a common surname, requires first name.

CONTRIBUTORS, SOURCES, & UPDATE HISTORY

The task of assembling the rosters, ship's history, and all of the information on the Sabalo web site has been a learning experience.  It would have been nearly impossible without the power of the internet, and the contributions of many who have submitted their recollections of shipmates.

ANY HELP IN FINDING MORE SABALO SAILORS  WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

The methods employed to date are outlined on another page.  SEARCH NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS
If you think you can assist in some way, or have other methods to suggest, please communicate.

UPDATE~ In 2020 Sailing lists, i.e. quarterly "muster lists" became available for searching on Ancestry.com.  Also included for some years are the monthly Personnel Diaries" which include the recording of dates aboard and transfer, and also promotion and qualification (SS) dates.  Coverage is limited in some years, and the documents available only go up to December 1963.
30 Jan 2007 - The microfilmed copies of the quarterly muster rolls at the National Archives II in College Park, Maryland have been reviewed.  During 3 1/2 days of difficult reading and interpretation of some poor quality microfilms a large quantity of material was copied.  Although not every single quarter was checked, no year had less than 2 quarters checked and copied for later data extraction, most had all quarters checked and names extracted.  All of the data has now been extracted and included on the roster lists.  With the possible exception of a few short timers or TAD's, the web site rosters now contain nearly every man who served in Sabalo**.

Some recollections of various men, and other sources, have supplied some names of men reported to have served on Sabalo that have not to date been found in the official records.  A list of these names is now collected on the MYSTERY MEN page.  Please check out the list and see if anything rings a bell.          CLICK HERE

Be sure to review the rosters, if you haven't done so in some time, and check on your old friends.  If you see anything that might be added, please be sure to communicate.
The very initial list was composed from my memory (getting weaker by the day), persons signing off on my qual sheet, the memory of John LeConte, EM3, and searching at these few sites and elsewhere on the internet.

====================================================================================================================================
Many men have provided various information about their shipmates.  Below are listed some of the major, early contributors to the ship's rosters.

26 Jan 01 - Don Nelson, STS2(SS) sent me a scan of a list of autographs of 58 crew members, ca. Sep '69. A few illegible, but all those readable are now included.

9 Feb 01 - Jim Palmer, ET3(SS) has supplied a copy of his compiled list of 70+ shipmates. Some are duplicates of those found elsewhere, but all have been included.
2 Mar 01 - Jim additionally supplied me with two sailing lists, one from '51 and one from '53.  All of these names have been included.  His first list of 70 was of men whom he had located.  The sailing lists are what he started with, and for many men nothing further is known at this time.

19 Mar 01 - Bob "Dutch" Schultz, EN2(SS) sent a copy of the onboard Thanksgiving meal menu from 27 Nov 1958.  It contains the names of 8 officers and 79 enlisted men.

8 Jul 01  A list of 71 members of United States Submarine Veterans Inc. who served on Sabalo was received and cross-checked against the existing roster.  21 new names were added.

26 Jul 01  "Ned" Heistermann sent a scan of a photo of the crew taken in early 1966. The identification listing on the back contained the names of 59 enlisted men and 9 officers.  About half of these were not previously listed. Also received was a promotion announcement from Feb. '65 which mentioned 14 names, most not previously listed.

28 Jan 02  Dennis Costarakis, last XO of Sabalo, provided a list of the last group of officers in the wardroom.(Dec 1970)

11 Aug 02  Charley Odom supplied a list composed from a page of the original commisioning party which contains the complete list of officers and enlisted plankowners from 1944. It contained the names of 9 officers and 74 enlisted men.

26 Oct 02  Doug MacCabe sent a scan of menus from Thanksgiving and Christmas 1957 that had complete crew lists.  There were 2 officers and 16 men included that were not previously listed.

22 Feb 03  Larry Hall sent a Christmas menu from 1968 which included 2 officers and 7 enlisted men not previously listed along with additional info on about 20 other men.

25 April 04 Larry Douglas provided copies of the complete patrol reports for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th "simulated war patrols" for 55-57 which included the sailing lists.  These provided approximately 30-40 new listings, and corrections and additions to approx. 40-50 other men.

15 May 04  The patrol reports for the 1st and 2nd patrols, i.e. the Korean war patrol and the Northern Run of late 54-early 55, were obtained from the SubForceMuseum at SubBaseGroton.  At least a dozen new names were included, and corrections/additions to the info on about 20 more men.
